Pitch Changes Foot Contact

The steeper the slope, the more the foot is loaded at an angle instead of flat against the roof.

NIOSH recommends shorter steps and a wider stance while moving across a sloped roof, and zig-zag movement when walking upward can reduce the effective incline. Footwear supports this movement, but walking technique and fall protection remain separate controls.

Lower slope

More of the sole can remain naturally oriented toward the surface.

Surface contamination and roof material still matter.

Moderate slope

Forefoot flexibility, heel retention and lateral foot control become more noticeable.

Steeper roof

Footwear alone should never be used to justify treating a substantial fall exposure as controlled.

The required access and fall-protection system become increasingly important.

Asphalt Shingles

Granular asphalt shingles are one of the clearest use cases for specialty roofing traction footwear.
